Types of lithium batteries

  The secondary batteries used in the previous market mainly have two types: nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium ion (Li-ion). Lithium ion batteries have been mass-produced in the liquid lithium ion battery (LiB) and polymer lithium ion battery (LiP) two kinds. So in many cases, the Li-ion marked on the battery must be a lithium-ion battery. But it is not necessarily a liquid lithium-ion battery, it may also be a polymer lithium-ion battery.

  Lithium-ion battery is an improved product of lithium battery. Lithium batteries have been around for a long time, but lithium is a highly active one (remember its place on the periodic table?). When it is used, it is not safe, often burning and bursting when charging, and then there are improved lithium-ion batteries, adding active components that can inhibit lithium (such as cobalt, manganese, etc.), so that lithium batteries really achieve safety, efficiency and convenience, and the old lithium batteries are basically eliminated. As for how to distinguish them, it can be identified from the logo of the battery, lithium battery is Li, lithium-ion battery is Li-ion. Now, the so-called "lithium batteries" used in notebooks and mobile phones are actually lithium-ion batteries.

  The basic structure of modern batteries includes three elements: positive electrode, negative electrode and electrolyte. As a kind of battery, lithium-ion batteries also have these three elements. General lithium-ion technology uses liquid or inorganic colloidal electrolytes, so a strong housing is required to hold the combustible active ingredients, which increases the weight and cost of the battery, and also limits the flexibility of size and styling. In general, the minimum thickness of liquid lithium-ion secondary batteries is 6mm, and it is more difficult to reduce.

  The so-called polymer lithium-ion battery is the use of polymer materials as its main battery system in at least one or more of these three main structures.

  The new generation of polymer lithium-ion batteries is already very high in the degree of polymerization and physicalization, so the shape can be thinly shaped (the thinnest 0.5 mm), arbitrary area and arbitrary shape, which greatly improves the flexibility of the battery design, so that it can match the product needs to make any shape and capacity of the battery. At the same time, the unit energy of the polymer lithium-ion battery is 50% higher than that of the current general lithium-ion battery, and its capacity, charge-discharge characteristics, safety, operating temperature range, cycle life and environmental performance have been greatly improved than that of the lithium-ion battery.

  Liquid lithium-ion (LiB) batteries currently sold on the market in the case of overcharging, easy to cause the safety valve rupture and fire, which is very dangerous, so it is necessary to install a protection IC line to ensure that the battery does not overcharge the situation. In terms of polymer lithium-ion batteries, this type of battery has better charge-discharge resistance than liquid lithium-ion batteries, so the requirements for external protection IC lines can be appropriately relaxed. In addition, in terms of charging, polymer lithium-ion batteries can be charged using IC Constant current, and the time required for CCCV(Constant Curert -Constant Voltage) charging mode used by lithium-ion secondary batteries can shorten the waiting time.
