It is understood that Toshiba Materials has developed tungsten oxide powder as an electrode material for new battery devices, because tungsten oxide helps electronic conductivity and lithium ion diffusion, achieving ultra-fast charging and discharging. This material can build high-power density battery devices, thereby achieving smaller and lighter devices.
More specifically, Toshiba has developed a powder material called WO2.72, which is also called purple tungsten oxide in our industry. Purple tungsten oxide is a type of tungsten oxide. Its appearance is purple fine crystalline powder. It is a tungsten oxide product developed in my country in recent years. Its phase composition is W18O49. Because it has the largest mesopore volume, the smallest micropore volume, the narrowest pore size distribution, the smallest fractional dimension, the largest average pore size and specific surface area, it is the preferred material for preparing ultrafine tungsten powder or nano tungsten powder, photocatalytic materials, petroleum catalysts, and microelectronic integrated circuit boards.
The preparation processes of purple tungsten oxide mainly include APT wet hydrogen direct reduction method, tungstate hydrogen reduction method, APT ammonia mild reduction method, etc. But Toshiba did not introduce their purple tungsten oxide production process. According to Toshiba Materials' official website, purple tungsten oxide has very high chemical activity, which can enhance electronic conductivity. Since the material has low internal resistance and excellent Li ion diffusivity, using purple tungsten oxide as the negative electrode of the battery can achieve large current charging and discharging. In particular, the discharge characteristics are excellent in low temperature environments, and even at -40°C, it still has a rate characteristic equal to or higher than the discharge characteristics of double-layer capacitors (EDLC). Previously, the rate characteristics of Li-ion secondary batteries and Li-ion capacitors at low temperatures have been an unresolved issue.
The battery is characterized by power density and energy density that can be increased to 2 to 3 times that of double-layer capacitors. Compared with lithium-ion capacitors designed to increase the energy density of EDLCs, the energy density has also been improved. In the field of capacitors, Li-ion secondary batteries are not suitable for high-output applications due to insufficient output power and difficulty in development. The development of this battery will make it possible to use batteries in high-output power applications.
