Solid-state batteries are the core of the future battery industry. In terms of product safety, energy density and cycle life performance, solid-state batteries have the potential to make a qualitative breakthrough in battery performance. Therefore, Japan, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries and well-known companies around the world have layout, taking advantage of their respective advantages to dominate the development of solid-state batteries.
Different from the current situation where lithium-ion battery oligarchs gather in China, Japan and South Korea, solid-state battery technology, as the next generation of battery technology, has become the focus of various battery manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers, and currently there is a multi-party competition situation.
Domestic and foreign industry status quo
01Companies led by Toyota lead the development of Japanese industry
Japan has elevated the development of all-solid-state batteries to a national strategic level, giving full play to its traditional advantages of closely integrating domestic production, government, and research to develop solid-state battery technology with nationwide efforts. Currently, Japanese companies and research institutions rank first in the world in terms of the number of patents they have applied for in terms of technological research, and they are also ahead of other countries in terms of industrialization process. Japan's main line of research and development for all-solid-state batteries has gradually shifted from the initial exploration of high-performance electrolyte materials to solving issues such as trial production of battery cells, development of manufacturing processes, and charge and discharge cycle life. Research focus has entered the stage of trying to develop appropriate combinations of positive and negative electrode materials according to different applications, and trying to develop manufacturing processes to achieve large-scale mass production.
02 American technology startups mainly develop solid-state battery technology
Driven by Department of Energy (DOE) science funds and national laboratory research, U.S. research in solid-state batteries has made significant progress, and many start-up companies have been spawned on this basis, such as QuantumScape, SEEO, Solid Power, Solid Energy Systems, Ionic Materials, etc., these start-up companies have received investment from automobile giants such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Hyundai and a number of venture capital funds due to their advancement in solid-state battery technology. It is through the technological innovation capabilities of these start-up companies that the United States has entered the forefront of global solid-state battery research. From the perspective of technical paths, the technical paths chosen by these start-up companies in the United States are mainly polymer electrolytes and oxide electrolytes, and the negative electrodes mostly use lithium metal.
03The business community represented by Samsung leads the development of solid-state batteries in South Korea
On the road of R&D and industrialization of solid-state batteries, South Korea is led by the business community. Under the guidance of government departments, major domestic automotive battery manufacturers jointly develop all-solid-state batteries. At present, the main companies researching solid-state batteries in South Korea include Samsung SDI, LG and Hyundai Motor. Among them, Samsung, LG and SK Innovation chose to establish a joint fund to jointly develop solid-state batteries. Hyundai did not participate in the above three alliances, but chose to enter the solid-state battery industry chain through independent development, cooperation with universities and external investment. In terms of patents, the distribution in South Korea is relatively concentrated, with Samsung SDI, LG and Hyundai accounting for more than 50%; in terms of technical paths, sulfide electrolytes are the mainstay.
04Current status and key enterprises of my country’s solid-state battery industry
Although domestic companies did not start as early as Japan, the United States, and South Korea in solid-state battery research, with the development of 18650 lithium battery 2600mah technology, more and more companies have participated in the research and development and industrialization process of solid-state batteries. Through patent searches, we can see that domestic companies that are developing solid-state 18650 lithium battery 2600mah patents include Jiangsu Qingtao Energy, BYD, Thornton New Energy, Ganfeng Lithium, Beijing Weilan, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, CATL, etc. In addition, Jiawei Co., Ltd., Wanxiang, China Electric Power Shen, Penghui Energy, Hengdian DMC, etc. have also announced their involvement in the field of solid-state batteries, but most companies are still in the planning and layout stage. Moreover, judging from the global patent layout of various companies, most of the patents of domestic companies are concentrated in China, and the number of overseas patents is seriously insufficient, which will have an adverse impact on companies' future participation in international market competition.
