　　Tesla is secretly developing its own battery to reduce dependence on Panasonic

　　According to the US financial website CNBC, Tesla has a secret R&D laboratory and is developing methods to produce its own batteries for positive lithium-ion batteries, thus reducing its dependence on battery partner Panasonic.

　　The report stated that five Tesla employees revealed that Tesla is developing methods to produce batteries independently. Tesla has relied on Panasonic to produce car batteries since signing a wide-ranging cooperation agreement with Panasonic in 2014.

　　These Tesla employees said that Tesla’s secret laboratory is located at the Kato Road factory and is conducting some research on battery manufacturing. The lab is just minutes away from Tesla's Fremont, Calif., car manufacturing plant.

　　Industry insiders say the move could help Tesla supply cheaper, higher-performance electric vehicles than it does now without having to pay manufacturing costs or share data and resources with outside suppliers or partners. According to market research firm IHS Markit, battery packs and cells are important cost components of electric vehicles.

　　At the company's annual shareholder meeting in early June, Tesla CEO Elon Musk admitted that Tesla has been limited by its lithium-ion batteries in the past. This means that the shortage of batteries limits the production and sales of Tesla's electric vehicles and energy storage systems (Powerwa lithium-ion battery manufacturers and PowerPack).

　　Additionally, producing its own batteries would fit in with Musk's overall goal of making Tesla as vertically integrated as possible, developing, manufacturing and selling everything it can, even its own company software.
