Technology that can improve the fast charging performance of graphite anodes for 2200mah 18650 battery
According to foreign media reports, a group of researchers from Hanyang University in South Korea used amorphous Al2O3 to achieve surface modification of graphite, which is an efficient way to improve the fast charging performance of graphite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The researchers published a paper in the Journal of Power Sources. At a high charging rate of 4000 mA/g, the reversible capacity of the surface-modified graphite is about 337.1 mAh/g, of which the weight of Al2O3 accounts for 1%. When the power intensity is 100 mA/g, the corresponding capacitance retention is about 97.2%. In order to solve the technical deficiencies of lithium-ion batteries, it is particularly important to find suitable battery materials to ensure the electrochemical performance and safety of the battery while achieving ultra-fast charging rates. To achieve this goal, various strategies have been adopted to improve the charging capacity of lithium-ion batteries, with varying degrees of success. Obviously, the wettability between the electrolyte and the electrode plays an important role, which determines the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. In this study, the amorphous Al2O3 coating can greatly improve the wettability of battery materials such as graphite and battery separators. According to the researchers' prediction, the coating can improve the electrolyte permeability of the entire surface area of the graphite electrode, thereby improving the fast charging performance of the graphite anode material. The researchers used LiCoO2 cathode and Al2O3-coated graphite anode to carry out pure battery tests. The experiments proved that the introduction of amorphous Al2O3 can provide the charging performance of graphite anode materials. Wettability tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the improvement in fast charging performance was due to the Al2O3 coating coated on the graphite surface, which improved the wettability of the electrolyte on the graphite.
