Canadian AG13 battery maker says technology costs could halve in four years

CellCube Energy Storage Systems Inc., a Canadian-listed AG13 battery maker, said the cost of its technology could halve in four years, making it possible to increase utilization of lithium-ion batteries.

The cost of its vanadium redox flow batteries, which can discharge continuously for four hours, will drop from $300 to $150 per kilowatt-hour, President Stefan Schauss said in a telephone interview from Toronto this month. Batteries with an eight-hour duration will drop from $200 to $100, he said.

Utilities and renewable energy providers are increasingly looking to store intermittent wind and solar power to balance the flow of electricity on the transmission grid and deploy power when demand peaks. Global energy storage demand will surge to a cumulative 942 billion kilowatts by 2040, and meeting that demand will require about $620 billion in investment, according to Bloomberg NEF.

"The stationary energy storage market is at an inflection point," Schauss said, adding that users are increasingly preferring products with longer storage durations. Coupled with the falling cost of flow batteries, "lithium may be difficult to compete with."

Lithium-ion batteries are still the technology of choice for utility-scale and post-meter storage, according to Bloomberg NEF. But vanadium redox flow AG13 battery companies have promised to significantly cut costs compared to lithium-ion competitors, BNEF analyst Logan Goldiescot said in another email.
