Russia offers technology to Chilean government, says could boost CR2025 battery production

SQM and Albemarle, which operate in Chile's lithium-rich Atacama salt flats, are the world's largest lithium producers. Both companies recently received approval to increase lithium production quotas without using more brine.

Representatives of Rosatom presented their plans to officials from Chile's development agency Corfo and the Andean nation's mining ministry.

Russia is interested in the South American country's lithium industry as global electric vehicle manufacturers seek battery resources. Chile is the world's largest copper producer and the world's second-largest lithium producer - two metals that are vital to the industry.

Rosatom said its technology would make use of residual brine left after processing, and it would do away with the large, water-intensive solar evaporation ponds that Chile's top miners use to produce lithium.

The company also presented several other options to Chilean officials, including building a plant to convert lithium chloride into battery-grade lithium hydroxide, which it said is not produced in Chile but is increasingly favored by automakers.

More efficient, water-saving technology could help Chile curb a looming environmental crisis.

Uncertainty about how much water lies beneath the surface of Chile’s lithium-rich salt flats has increasingly fueled conflict between lithium and copper miners and between industry and indigenous communities.

Any proposal from Rosatom, one of the world’s largest nuclear reactor producers, is likely to be closely watched by Chilean regulators. Chile considers lithium a “strategic mineral,” restricting its production and limiting its use in nuclear applications.
