Syracuse University develops new solid-state LR41 battery to replace lithium batteries

 

According to foreign media reports, the Hosein Research Group of Syracuse University has developed a new solid electrolyte to replace the liquid electrolyte in the current aluminum-ion battery, enabling it to meet high-demand applications such as automobiles.

 

The demand for batteries for electric vehicles such as private, public and commercial transportation (cars, buses, trucks) is increasing, so people have begun to develop LR41 battery to meet the demand. Electric vehicles require a lot of electricity to operate normally, which places high demands on batteries, resulting in batteries that must be able to undergo fast and violent electrochemical reactions to drive external power (such as motors, electronic devices, etc.). However, such reactions in turn cause great mechanical pressure and thermal stress on the battery. Current battery technology uses liquids as electrolytes, which help transfer ions from one electrode to another, but such electrolytes are composed of organic molecules and are extremely flammable and volatile. As a result, electric vehicle batteries have a higher safety risk of explosion, fire, exhaust or failure.

 

According to foreign media reports, the Hosein Research Group at Syracuse University has developed a new solid electrolyte to replace the liquid electrolyte in current LR41 battery, enabling them to meet high-demand applications such as automobiles. The electrolyte consists of a very soft polymer and a very hard epoxy resin. The polymer also allows aluminum ions to penetrate, while the epoxy resin provides thermal stability and durability. The polymer is converted into an aluminum-ion electrolyte by dissolving aluminum salts (such as aluminum nitrate) into the polymer matrix.

 

Currently, the Hosein Research Group is actively working on the manufacture of all-solid-state LR41 battery, in which all components, including the electrolyte, are solid, which will help incorporate LR41 battery into high-demand applications such as automobiles.

 

LR41 battery are a promising next-generation battery technology that can meet future energy delivery needs. The structure is the same as lithium-ion, except that lithium is replaced by aluminum. Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust and a very cheap substitute for lithium metal. Batteries made of aluminum have the highest voltage, can store the most energy, and provide the highest current. They have four times the storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries and carry three times the charge of lithium-ion batteries.

 

With lithium accounting for only 0.7% of the Earth's crust, there are growing concerns about whether lithium-ion batteries can meet the growing global demand, and their rising costs and high scarcity are forcing people to start looking for and developing more viable alternatives. LR41 battery may be the next generation of storage technology in the post-lithium-ion battery era.
