US researchers have developed a new electrolyte that can be charged and discharged 1,000 times
Recently, U.S. researchers reported that the use of highly fluorinated electrolytes can significantly improve the storage capacity and durability of batteries. They believe that this technology can promote the further development of the pure electric vehicle industry.
Researchers from the University of Maryland, Army Research Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory and other institutions published a paper in the new issue of the British magazine "Nature Nanotechnology" saying that they prepared a lithium metal with extremely unstable chemical properties as the negative electrode. A battery with a high-fluorine electrolyte was found to be able to be charged and discharged up to 1,000 times, while the power storage capacity only dropped to 93% of the initial level. This means that pure electric vehicles using this kind of battery can be driven stably for many years without losing much of their cruising range.
In addition to lithium metal negative electrodes, high-fluorine electrolytes can also be used with extremely active electrode materials such as nickel and high-voltage cathodes. Normally, these electrode materials tend to react strongly with other substances, eating other surrounding substances and producing a large amount of energy, causing the battery to be extremely unstable. But new research points out that fluorine can stabilize these highly active and aggressive electrode materials, thereby extending battery life, and can act as a flame retardant for flammable electrolytes.
Researchers have used coin cells as experimental batteries to demonstrate the properties of such batteries. Currently, they are working with corporate partners to further optimize and debug the use of this electrolyte to produce higher voltage batteries.
