Battery Management Systems (BMS) play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of batteries, and one of their key functions is cell balancing. In a battery pack, individual cells may have slight differences in their capacity, internal resistance, and state of charge (SoC) due to manufacturing tolerances or differences in usage patterns. These differences can lead to uneven charging and discharging, which over time can cause some cells to be overcharged or over - discharged, reducing the overall performance and lifespan of the battery pack.

The balancing function of BMS is designed to address these cell - to - cell variations. There are two main types of cell balancing methods: passive and active. The benefits of effective cell balancing are numerous. It can extend the overall lifespan of the battery pack by ensuring that all cells age at a more uniform rate. For example, if one cell in a battery pack is consistently overcharged due to imbalances, it will degrade much faster than the other cells. By equalizing the charge levels, the wear and tear on all cells are more evenly distributed. Additionally, cell balancing can improve the performance of the battery pack. A balanced battery pack can deliver more consistent power output, reducing the likelihood of voltage drops during high - current discharges. It also allows for better utilization of the overall capacity of the battery pack, as cells are not limited by the lowest - capacity cell in the pack.
