Dyson's nearly 20 billion yuan car-making process accelerates "digital motor + lithium polymer battery" as key technology
In recent years, with its own black technology, simple design and expensive price, Internet celebrity hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, air circulation fans and other products have allowed Dyson to break into the Chinese market and gain a large number of fans. Now, the British appliance manufacturer has officially decided to put electric car manufacturing on the agenda, and mass-produced models will go on sale in 2020.
Dyson founder James Dyson said: There is no point in copying other people's old paths. Dyson's first electric car is not a sports car, nor is it a low-priced electric car.
It is reported that the new car adopts a five-door design, with body dimensions of 4.1 meters, 1.75 meters and 1.5 meters respectively. Like all Dyson products, the overall design of the new car's body follows the concept of form serving function. For example, the front and rear windshields will be equipped with the Dyson Airblade windshield cleaning system.
James Dyson also said that the company will invest 2 billion pounds (approximately 17.41 billion yuan) in electric technology and vehicle design. "Securities Daily" reporters reviewed the information disclosed by Dyson and showed that Dyson's operating income in 2018 was approximately 38.2 billion yuan and its profit was approximately 9.552 billion yuan. This means that Dyson will invest the equivalent of nearly two years of net profits in transforming car manufacturing.
Dyson’s long road to building a car
In fact, Dyson’s car-making plans and layout have already been in place. As early as 1990 of the last century, Dyson began to develop cyclone filters that could be used to capture diesel exhaust particles; by 1993, its team successfully developed a diesel waste treatment system.
In the years that followed, Dyson made remarkable achievements in the home appliance market around digital motors, battery systems, fluid dynamics, etc., and was well known to consumers.
It was not until 2013 that Dyson's car-making project was put on the agenda again. During this period, Dyson successively recruited R&D, technical and other talents from Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, Bentley, Tesla, Aston Martin and other car companies. A R&D team of more than 400 people has been formed.
Immediately afterwards, in 2015, Dyson acquired the American lithium polymer battery company Sakit3 for US$90 million; in 2016, Dyson announced an investment of US$1.4 billion to build a solid-state lithium-ion battery factory; in 2017, Dyson began to build a global supply chain control center; in 2018 In August this year, Dai Lithium-ion Batteries invested £116 million to build more than 10 miles (approximately 16 kilometers) of test tracks in southern England to evaluate the performance of vehicles.
The landmark event originated on January 22 this year, when Dyson announced the hiring of former Infiniti President Roland Krueger to lead the automotive business. The appointment took effect in April. By appointing Kruger, Dyson has proven to the outside world that it is serious about its electric vehicle project. Transforming into car manufacturing, winning less and losing more
Dyson is not the only technology company seeking to build cars. Previously, Apple had developed car manufacturing through Project Titan (Project Titan). However, the plan was eventually terminated and the entire team shifted to platform development. In addition, IT industry giants including Google, Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and other companies are developing in-vehicle intelligent network technology for lithium-ion batteries, with the intention of entering the automotive market.
However, it turns out that it is difficult for new car manufacturers to gain a foothold in the industry. As a technology company, Dyson’s car manufacturing is worrying. Because Google and Apple, as technology giants, have long announced their entry into the car lithium-ion battery manufacturer market, but so far there have been no results.
An analyst told reporters that electric vehicles are a typical capital-intensive, technology-intensive, talent-intensive, and highly comprehensive industry. Its ultra-high industry threshold requires participants to understand every aspect of the supply chain, manufacturing links, and customer resources. All clear and distinct.
The above-mentioned analysts said that compared with traditional car companies, new car companies generally have no experience in car manufacturing, and their product development cycles are significantly shorter. But car-making itself is a disciplined process. Even though the industry is currently becoming more electrified and intelligent, the equipment and processes used in the car-making process cannot be surpassed or simplified.
It should be pointed out that Dyson currently has no plans to cooperate with other vehicle manufacturers for OEM, which means that Dyson will bear the huge risk of independent R&D and manufacturing of huge lithium batteries. In addition, the layout of its subsequent R&D, production, and marketing systems will also cost it a lot of money.
