Cobalt is expensive in the metal trading market (Co) and has limited storage capacity. Nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) are relatively cheap, while iron (Fe) has a large storage capacity. The requirements for rechargeable batteries are: high capacity, high output voltage, good charge discharge cycle performance, stable output voltage, high current charge discharge, electrochemical stability, safe use (without combustion or explosion due to overcharging, overdischarging, short circuit and other operational errors), wide temperature range, non-toxic or less toxic, and no pollution to the environment. The choice of LiFePO4 as the positive electrode for lithium iron phosphate batteries has good performance requirements, especially in terms of discharge rate (5-10C discharge), stable discharge voltage, safety (non combustion, non explosion), lifespan (number of cycles), and no pollution to the environment.
