Foreign media reported that Belgian research partners Imec and EnergyVille have developed a solid-state battery with an energy density of 400Wh/L that can be fully charged in two hours. The production process is also very similar to batteries with liquid electrolytes.
Researchers at Imec specialize in nanoelectronics, digital and energy technologies and have formed a research team within the framework of EnergyVille focused on sustainable energy and smart energy systems.
Together they developed a process that relies on a solid nanocomposite electrolyte and a standard cathode combination made of lithium iron phosphate and a lithium metal anode. Solid electrolytes have extremely high conductivities of up to 10 ms/cm and, depending on Imec pressure release, have the potential for even higher conductivities.
The new material is characterized by its ability to be applied as a liquid via a wet chemical coating, only in this way can it become more solid. This creates an especially tight connection between the electrode and electrolyte - one of the main challenges of solid-state batteries.
It is understood that when the energy density was developed to be 400Wh/L, the value of Imec has doubled from the previous year. The goal is to increase the energy density to 1000Wh/L by 2024, which can be fully charged in less than 30 minutes.
Imec/EnergyVille said it is working with the University of Hasselt to produce solid-state pouch batteries at the EnergyVille campus in Genk to improve materials and processes, with the aim of testing the structure of solid-state batteries.
According to Imec, the batteries can be assembled on a "slightly modified" lithium-ion battery production line. If wet cell facilities could also be used for solid-state batteries, there wouldn't be a need for large investments in entirely new production facilities.
"The new battery demonstrates that our breakthrough electrolytes can be integrated into high-performance batteries," said Philippe Vereecken, Scientific Director of Imec/EnergyVille. "This pilot line allows us to take the next step in extending the battery breakthrough to industrially relevant processes and formats by using a manufacturing process similar to wet cells."
For the upcoming volume production phase, the research center will be in dialogue with the world's major material suppliers and battery manufacturers to optimize opportunities to advance the technology.
