The EU has vigorously promoted the development of magnesium batteries to reduce the demand for raw materials for 3500mah 18650 battery.
The Ulm Helmholtz Institute and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany are jointly developing magnesium-based energy storage technology. Magnesium batteries are a project under the EU's "Horizon 2020" research program (E-MAGIC). The EU has invested more than 6.5 million euros in this project, bringing together the expertise of 10 European research institutions. If the project is successful in the future, it will be expected to replace existing lithium-ion batteries. Magnesium batteries have more advantages than traditional lithium-ion batteries. According to Professor Maximilian Fechtner, deputy director of the Ulm Helmholtz Institute and head of the project, magnesium is one of the important candidate materials for the post-lithium strategy. As an anode material, magnesium allows for a higher energy density. Magnesium batteries are more efficient, cheaper and safer than lithium-ion batteries. "The wide availability of magnesium batteries plays a decisive role in promoting the development of electric vehicles and distributed energy storage technologies." The Ulm Helmholtz Institute cooperates with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German Special Aerospace Center in the E-MAGIC project to carry out research and design of magnesium battery electrochemical concepts. Scientists at the Ulm Helmholtz Institute hope to help partners understand the obstacles and challenges at the material level and find new ways to solve current obstacles. Dr. Zhirong Zhao, who is responsible for coordinating the solid-state chemistry research, said that the special challenge facing magnesium batteries is the service life, which is currently the focus of research. But magnesium batteries do have many attractive properties. For example, magnesium anodes do not form dendrites. This electrochemical deposit on the electrode can form needle-like structures in lithium-ion batteries, causing interference or even short circuits, while magnesium does not have similar problems. This is why we can use magnesium in metallic form. Direct use of metallic magnesium can increase the storage capacity of the battery and improve the performance of the battery. In addition to higher safety and energy density, magnesium is about 3,000 times more abundant on earth than lithium and is easier to recycle. Therefore, magnesium batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion batteries and also help reduce the dependence on lithium raw materials in battery manufacturing.
