By 2030, the cycle life of lithium battery energy storage systems will leap from 5,000 to 10,000 times, achieving a significant reduction in costs and large-scale application; achieving rapid development of companies without any subsidy policies, while supporting the development of the energy revolution.
Anyone who has run a marathon knows the term "hitting the wall" - exhausted, physically exhausted, and even mentally exhausted, belonging to the arrival of physiological limits, and having a strong feeling of wanting to give up. "Hitting the wall" usually occurs around 30 kilometers, which varies from person to person, but it is a huge test for every contestant.
This is the same dilemma that the energy storage industry is facing now. The stage of transition from the project demonstration period to commercialization is precisely the most painful at this point. So, how can companies overcome the "hitting the wall" difficulty?
Recently, at the "my country Energy Research Association Annual Meeting 2017" Energy Storage Promotes Energy Innovation and Development Forum, experts and scholars gathered together to cheer for the marathon of commercialization of the energy storage industry.
Policy guidance for lithium battery recycling draws attention
It is understood that the problems of energy storage and wind power and photovoltaic power generation at the beginning of their development are very similar, with three characteristics: small scale, high cost, and slow development speed.
In this regard, Qi Zhixin, director of the Science and Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration, said that in order to build a policy environment conducive to the development of energy storage, the policy barriers to energy storage access will be removed first. It is important to study and form a market mechanism that reflects the value of energy storage, including a price mechanism, based on the spirit and progress of the power system reform and market-oriented.
At the meeting, Qi Zhixin said that my country's first comprehensive policy document on energy storage, the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of Energy Storage Technology and Industry", has basically completed the signing and approval procedures and is expected to be officially issued in the near future.
According to Qi Zhixin, the spirit of innovation will run through all parts of the "Guiding Opinions" and is the soul of this document; at the same time, the market will be dominated, the government will set up the stage for the company to perform, and the technical route issues will be completely decided by the company; adhere to systematic thinking, view energy storage from the perspective of the energy system and the entire industrial chain, and seek opportunities for energy storage development. For example, although the field of lithium battery energy storage has just emerged, considering the value of the battery's entire life cycle, the document has put forward clear requirements in terms of lithium battery cascade utilization. This is particularly important amid the controversy in the industry that "cascade utilization is a false proposition."
"We cannot expect institutional reform to be completed overnight. The system is in the process of continuous improvement. Energy storage also shows strong vitality. I believe that the policy environment is getting better and better." Qi Zhixin said.
Lai Xiaokang, former director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and New Materials of my country's Electric Power Research Institute, put forward his own suggestions from the perspective of specific policy formulation. He believes that the introduction of some detailed rules requires companies to provide the reliable and quantitative data and corresponding analysis obtained in the demonstration project to decision-making agencies as a basis for decision-makers to formulate policies.
Endogenous motivation to reduce costs is not limited to battery companies
For those who have worked in the energy storage industry for a long time, hearing the news of the policy announcement is undoubtedly very exciting. Wang Shicheng, chairman of Soying Electric, believes that the government does need to provide certain guidance at the policy level and give some "glucose" in the company's start-up stage.
Liu Xiaolu, vice president of Shuangdeng Group, put forward his own ideas and demands from the perspective of battery companies. He believes that there are two challenges in the current industrial development: First, the gross profit margin of many demonstration projects may be less than zero, which is so low that battery companies often have to bite the bullet. However, reducing the cost of the entire energy storage system is not just the responsibility of battery companies. It is hoped that participants such as BMS, TCS, EMS and container systems can take the initiative to reduce costs; second, it is unrealistic for energy storage to achieve investors' ideal returns with only one functional output. It is necessary to tap into multiple values, and the difference between peaks and valleys is a point.
"When I first talked about 'hitting the wall', in fact, this 'wall' is the electricity price mechanism. This is indeed the case. When we are running in the start-up period, we really need energy storage system technology to get us running. When the energy storage industry reaches the marketization and commercialization goals later, this wall must be broken through." Yu Zhenhua, deputy director of the Energy Storage Professional Committee of the my country Energy Research Association, concluded. Therefore, the key to overcoming the "hitting the wall" problem lies in the company's endogenous motivation. In the early stage of commercial application demonstration, the company truly grasped and innovated the industrial value and did a good job in large-scale application demonstration projects.
Innovation drives the outlook for lithium battery energy storage technology
In the view of Chen Haisheng, chairman of the Energy Storage Professional Committee of the my country Energy Research Association, with the release of the "Guiding Opinions", the spring of energy storage has indeed arrived.
In order to welcome this "spring", the accumulation and progress of energy storage technology has also become a hot topic. Among all energy storage technologies, electrochemical energy storage, especially lithium battery energy storage technology, is developing relatively fast. Long life, low cost, high conversion efficiency and good safety are necessary conditions. No matter which energy storage system has these conditions, it can be promoted sufficiently.
According to the overall plan of our National Energy Administration, Chen Haisheng made a prospect of domestic energy storage technology. He believes that by 2030, the overall energy storage technology will achieve leapfrog development, the scale will be upgraded from the current kilowatt level to the megawatt level, and the leap from 10MW to 100MW will be achieved; the cycle life of lithium battery energy storage system will leap from 5,000 to 10,000 times, achieving a significant reduction in cost and large-scale application; achieving rapid development of companies without any subsidy policies, while supporting the development of the energy revolution.
Some people say that a marathon is incomplete without "hitting the wall". However, the runners who have survived the "wall" are already marathon warriors psychologically. The same is true in the energy storage marathon. In March 2017, the National Energy Administration issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of Energy Storage Technology and Industry (Draft for Comments)", and for the first time clarified the strategic positioning of energy storage in my country's energy industry. With the improvement of the policy environment, technological innovation and the enrichment of company application demonstrations, the energy storage industry has a promising future.
