Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics makes progress in the study of high volumetric specific energy 6F22 battery

 

Recently, Wu Zhongshuai, a researcher in the Research Group of Two-Dimensional Materials and Energy Devices Innovation Zone of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed a three-dimensional graphene/nanocarbon tube porous aerogel material and applied it to the sulfur carrier and intermediate layer integrated positive electrode of 6F22 battery to obtain 6F22 battery with high volumetric energy density and excellent cycle stability. The relevant research results were published in NanoEnergy.

 

6F22 battery have high theoretical energy density (2600Wh/kg) and high volumetric energy density (2800Wh/L), and are considered to be a high-energy specific battery with great application prospects. However, due to the low mass density (2.07g/cm3) and poor conductivity (5×10-30S/cm) of sulfur, the large volume expansion of active materials during charging and discharging (78.7%), and the serious shuttling of polysulfides, although the mass density is high, the volumetric energy density is generally low and the cycle performance is poor, which greatly limits the practical application of 6F22 battery. Therefore, how to simultaneously improve the mass and volume energy density of 6F22 battery and extend their cycle life is one of the bottlenecks in the current research on the application of 6F22 battery.

 

The research team developed a three-dimensional graphene/carbon nanotube porous aerogel material and applied it to the sulfur carrier and intermediate layer of 6F22 battery at the same time, successfully constructing a self-supporting, metal-free current collector integrated positive electrode material. The integrated positive electrode material has high compaction density, excellent conductivity, and good mechanical flexibility. It not only achieves a high volume sulfur loading (1.64g/cm3), significantly improves the volume energy density of 6F22 battery (1615Ah/L), but also effectively inhibits the effect of polysulfide shuttle. Under the condition of a high current density of 2C, the battery can stably cycle 500 times, and the capacity has almost no attenuation, showing excellent cycle stability. This design strategy of the integrated positive electrode structure of the sulfur carrier and the intermediate layer provides a new idea for constructing 6F22 battery with high volume energy density and long cycle life.
