Research Center Jülich in Germany develops fast-charging AG10 battery that can be fully charged in less than an hour
According to foreign media reports, researchers at the Jülich Research Center (FZ Jülich) in Germany have found a way to quickly charge AG10 battery. They showed that their concept can allow charging currents to be ten times higher than before. The key is to choose materials that have always been very compatible.
In this way, solid-state battery materials can work well together both chemically and mechanically. According to researchers at the Jülich Research Center, all components of the solid-state battery are made of different phosphate compounds.
"In order to allow the largest possible current to pass across the cell layer boundaries, we used very similar materials to produce all battery components," explains Dr. Hermann Tempel, group leader at the Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEK-9) at Jülich Research Center. "The anode, cathode and electrolyte are all made of different phosphate compounds, which enables charging powers of more than 3C (approximately 50 mAh/g), which is 10 times higher than what has been found in the literature."
The researchers designed a battery that can be fully charged in less than an hour. Their approach solves the biggest obstacle of AG10 battery - low current, which is why AG10 battery usually take 10 to 12 hours to fully charge. Tempel added: "Our concept battery with a favorable combination of materials allows for shorter charging times, and we have applied for a patent for this concept battery."
The materials used in the concept battery are reasonably priced and relatively easy to process. In addition, the researchers say that the new solid-state battery is essentially free of toxic substances. However, this is just the beginning. Dr. Shicheng Yu said: "In early tests, the new battery was very stable over 500 charge and discharge cycles, and 84% of the original battery capacity was retained, and a capacity loss of less than 1% is feasible." Researchers at the Jülich Research Center will further improve this fast-charging solid-state battery in the future.
