The reason why dry separators are less used in the ternary power battery market is the thickness, because thinner separators can reserve more space for the battery to accommodate active materials, thereby increasing energy density. However, with the improvement of technology and technology, dry separators are gradually transitioning to a trend of thinning. The dry separator originally used in power batteries was 32μm, and then gradually evolved into 25μm, 24μm, and 22μm. The mainstream model currently used is 20μm. The unanimous view among industry insiders is that the trend of dry process separators in 2019 will be dominated by products below 20μm. With the large-scale mature application of 16μm dry process single drawing (comparable to the current wet process + coating thickness) products, coupled with its core cost advantage (The cost is half that of wet separators), which is sufficiently attractive to power battery companies. However, the use of thin separators not only tests the technical strength and mass production capabilities of separator companies, but also tests the technical R&D and engineering strength of power battery companies. A senior executive of a separator company said that dry separators are composed of crystalline and amorphous areas and are fibrous. This fibrous material will undergo stress reduction in the electrolyte, and the stress reduction will eventually cause the separator to wrinkle. This problem was not very obvious when the separator was thicker than 20 μm, but now it becomes apparent soon after it is made thin. "Previously, no power battery company has used a 16μm single-layer dry separator. Some hidden problems will begin to amplify as the separator becomes thinner. Separator wrinkles have also become the most troublesome problem for battery companies using 16μm single-layer films." senior officials said. At present, a small number of domestic separator companies have large-scale mass production capabilities for 16μm separator products, and have entered the verification system of first-line power battery companies with R&D capabilities. Cost reduction and high voltage "add fuel to the flames" In the traditional impression, dry separators are suitable for lithium iron phosphate batteries, and wet separators are suitable for ternary batteries. In fact, there is no strict technical distinction between the two, such as BAK batteries and Fu Neng Technology and other ternary battery companies have been using dry separators; BYD, Guoxuan Hi-Tech and other lithium iron phosphate batteries partially use wet separators. "Each power battery company has different technical processes and uses different material systems, which are mainly related to the company's technical system and usage habits. Since the new energy vehicle industry is a policy city, subsidies have declined from decline to withdrawal, and the cost of batteries has changed. Under the reduction requirements, it is not impossible for battery companies to transform their material systems." A chief engineer of a power battery company explained. Faced with the sharp decline in subsidy policies, car companies have switched from the past blind pursuit of energy density to receiving subsidies and began to adopt a comprehensive market orientation. Based on comprehensive considerations of cost and performance, power battery companies are also actively cooperating with car companies' ideas. . In addition to converting some wet-process separators into dry-process separators to reduce costs, localized substitution has also become an important idea for power battery companies to reduce costs. Gaogong Lithium Battery has noticed that the dry process separators currently used by domestic ternary power battery companies are mainly imported. In order to meet the cost reduction needs of domestic new energy vehicles, the dry process separators of power batteries are gradually turning to domestic production. On January 28, Funeng Technology and Xingyuan Materials signed a cooperation agreement. The two parties agreed that the guaranteed supply demand for lithium battery separator products in 2019 will be no less than 40 million square meters, and the total annual procurement volume is allowed to be adjusted within 20%. If the guaranteed supply of the agreement is fully implemented, the contract value is expected to be approximately 102 million yuan. In addition, the increase in demand for dry separators this year also comes from the heating up of the energy storage market. At the same time, the demand for lithium iron phosphate batteries has increased significantly in subdivisions such as A00-class models, electric logistics vehicles, 48V micro-hybrid systems, electric ride-hailing, and electric forklifts, which has also driven the production of dry-process separators.
