Their joint research activities are scheduled to begin early next year. "The European Battery Alliance's joint research activities will cover the entire battery value stream - from raw materials to battery technology to recycling," the companies said in an online statement. "The main goal is to accumulate a wider range of battery cell production technologies." Undisclosed industrial and academic stakeholders from seven EU member states plan to participate in the EBU. Their research will focus on the production of raw materials, cell technology, production processes and recycling. They will also examine how to develop competitive yet environmentally sustainable factory technologies across the EU. Their efforts may be eligible for funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The announcement follows plans announced by European economic officials in December to transform the continent into an industrial hub for large-scale battery production. It also follows plans by some foreign companies to establish production facilities in Europe. For example, in July last year, Chinese battery giant Hyundai Ampere Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) planned to invest 240 million euros in a new battery factory in Thuringia, Germany, by 2022. CATL aims to use the facility to supply batteries for electric vehicles. BMW, as part of a €4 billion long-term partnership. In May last year, Germany's Siemens said it would invest 10 million euros to purchase a 32GWh lithium-ion battery production plant, which Northvolt plans to build in the Swedish city of Skelleftea. The two companies aim to start production next year. Separately, Northvolt announced in October this year that it plans to open a battery factory in Gdansk, Poland, at some point this year.
