  Effect of low temperature performance of lithium iron phosphate battery

  Take lithium iron phosphate batteries as an example. This type of battery has high safety and long cell life, but its low-temperature performance is slightly worse than batteries of other technical systems. Low temperature has an impact on the positive and negative electrodes, electrolytes and adhesives of lithium iron phosphate. For example, the lithium iron phosphate cathode itself has poor electronic conductivity and is prone to polarization in low-temperature environments, thereby reducing battery capacity. Affected by low temperature, the graphite lithium insertion speed is reduced, and metallic lithium is easily precipitated on the surface of the negative electrode. If the battery is left alone for insufficient time after charging, However, when it is put into use, all the metallic lithium cannot be embedded inside the graphite again, and part of the metallic lithium continues to exist on the surface of the negative electrode, which is very likely to form lithium dendrites and affect the safety of the battery;

  In low-temperature environments, the viscosity of the electrolyte will increase, and the lithium ion migration resistance will also increase; in addition, in the production process of lithium iron phosphate batteries, the adhesive is also a very critical factor, and low temperature affects the performance of the adhesive. It will also have a greater impact.

  Another problem caused by low temperature is reflected on the user side is the extension of charging time. When charging at low temperatures, the battery is prone to lithium precipitation, so before charging, the battery is generally heated slowly and the battery temperature rises to normal before charging. To solve the problem of low-temperature resistance of batteries, we usually start from three aspects: battery materials, cell design and PACK manufacturing to improve the low-temperature charge and discharge performance and cycle life of lithium.

  Compared with power batteries, special lithium iron phosphate batteries have higher performance requirements for product safety, reliability and low temperature resistance, and also have strict qualification requirements for enterprises.

  Lithium titanate batteries have excellent low temperature resistance. Lithium titanate batteries have normal charge and discharge capabilities in the temperature range of -50~60°C, and have good low temperature resistance. Lithium titanate batteries have become my country's pioneer in promoting new energy vehicles in cold areas due to their excellent low-temperature resistance. At present, many ternary lithium batteries also have low-temperature resistance, and lithium titanate batteries are the best in low-temperature resistance. The low-temperature bottleneck in the promotion of electric vehicles will also be gradually solved.

  Lithium iron phosphate batteries have the advantages of high specific energy, high specific power, high energy conversion efficiency, and long cycle life. However, they currently have the problem of difficulty in discharging and charging at low temperatures. There are certain risks in battery charging in low temperature environments. Therefore, industry insiders recommend that you try to avoid charging lithium-ion batteries at low temperatures. When the battery must be charged at low temperatures, it is necessary to choose as small a current as possible (i.e. slow charge) to charge the lithium-ion battery.
