New type sodium ion battery comes out

　　Recently, Washington State University announced that it has jointly developed a new type of sodium ion battery with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. It is understood that the energy storage capacity and chemical performance of the sodium ion battery are comparable to some commercial lithium batteries, but it has significant advantages in reducing costs;

　　According to official data, the capacity of sodium ion batteries is similar to that of some lithium ion batteries, which can maintain more than 80% of the power after 1000 charging and discharging cycles. For the problem that the energy storage capacity of sodium ion batteries is not as good as that of lithium batteries, which has been criticized before, the team created a layered metal oxide cathode and a liquid electrolyte containing additional sodium ions, creating a solution with more concentrated sodium ions, In this way, sodium ions can continue to move, organize the formation of inactive surface crystals, and enable the battery to generate electricity unobstructed;

　　For the manufacturing cost, traditional materials such as lithium and cobalt are not only rare, but also expensive. This virtually creates some difficulties in controlling the manufacturing cost of batteries. Sodium ions come from the earth's oceans or crust, and are abundant in reserves and cheap. If they are widely used, they will be able to control the cost well; With the advent of this new type of sodium ion battery, the price of electric vehicles may be significantly reduced.
