In addition to the mainstream ternary lithium-ion battery and iron phosphate lithium-ion battery market, solid-state lithium-ion batteries are also attracting more and more attention and are called the new star battery of the future.

 

Traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries are called rocking chair batteries, which have positive and negative poles at both ends and a liquid electrolyte in the middle. When lithium ions move back and forth at both ends of the rocking chair like an athlete, the battery will charge and discharge as the lithium ions move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode and then to the positive electrode. On the other hand, solid-state batteries have solid electrolytes, and the density and structure of the electrolyte allow more charged ions to gather at one end, conduct more current, and increase the capacity of the battery.

 

From the perspective of technical potential, it is relatively difficult to improve the energy density of ternary lithium-powered lithium-ion batteries, but it is more feasible in theory to improve the energy density of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. First, the voltage platform of solid lithium-ion batteries has been improved. Solid electrolytes have a wider electrochemical window than organic electrolytes, which is conducive to further improving the energy density of batteries. Second, solid electrolytes can isolate the growth of lithium dendrites, and the scale of material application systems has been greatly improved, laying the foundation for new lithium-ion battery technologies with higher energy density space. Third, the current energy density of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries is about 400wh/Kg, and the maximum potential value is estimated to be 900wh/Kg, with more than 100% room for improvement.

 

Solid lithium-ion batteries inherit the advantages of traditional lithium-ion batteries and have made great progress in safety and energy density. At present, the energy density of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries can be as high as 300~400Wh/kg, which is expected to become an important development direction for the next generation of high-energy-density power and energy storage battery technology, and is also a consensus in academia and industry.

 

In short, the familiar road of lithium iron phosphate is being replaced, the familiar road of ternary lithium-ion batteries has become the mainstream, and all solid lithium-ion batteries or new lithium-ion batteries will gradually replace ternary lithium-ion batteries.

 

The health and large-scale promotion and application of new energy vehicles in the future largely depends on the supporting strength of power lithium-ion batteries with high safety and high driving distance. At present, the progress of new energy vehicle power lithium-ion battery technology will be driven by national policies and the dual pressure of external competition, requiring the existing ternary lithium-ion battery technology to continue to improve, together with new lithium-ion battery technology and breakthroughs, in order to achieve disruptive innovation. For battery companies, this is the best time and the worst time.
