Short Circuit Handling of Liquid Lithium-Ion Batteries
A short circuit in liquid lithium-ion batteries can be extremely dangerous, as it can lead to a rapid increase in current, causing intense heat generation and potentially triggering thermal runaway. There are two main types of short circuits: external short circuits, which occur when the positive and negative terminals of the battery are directly connected by a conductor outside the battery, and internal short circuits, which are caused by defects within the battery, such as separator punctures or metal impurities.
When an external short circuit occurs, the battery management system is the first line of defense. BMS detects the sudden increase in current and immediately activates the protection circuit. It quickly cuts off the connection between the battery and the external circuit, interrupting the flow of current and preventing excessive heat generation. In some cases, the BMS may also trigger an alarm system to notify the user of the short-circuit event.
For internal short circuits, prevention is more challenging but crucial. Manufacturers take multiple measures during the production process to reduce the risk of internal short circuits. High-quality raw materials are used, and strict quality control processes are implemented to ensure the integrity of the battery components. The separator, which prevents direct contact between the positive and negative electrodes, is made of materials with high puncture resistance and good insulation properties. Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as precise coating and winding processes, are employed to avoid any damage to the separator or electrodes during production.
In the event that an internal short circuit still occurs, some batteries are designed with thermal fuses. A thermal fuse is a component that melts when the temperature inside the battery reaches a certain level due to the short circuit, effectively cutting off the electrical connection and stopping the short-circuit current. Additionally, the use of flame-retardant materials in battery casings can help prevent the spread of fire in case of thermal runaway caused by a short circuit, enhancing overall safety.
