A research team led by the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory recently discovered that when a battery generates electric current, if the battery electrode is made of nanoparticles, the lithium ion concentration in some areas of the nanoparticles will first rise, and then dropped, rather than continuing to increase as previously thought.
A lattice is a structure in which particles inside a crystal are arranged in a certain geometric pattern. The working principle of button battery cr2032 is that lithium ions move between the positive and negative electrode lattices. When charging, lithium ions flow from the positive electrode to the negative electrode, and the opposite occurs when discharging.
“Similar to a sponge absorbing water, we see an increasing concentration of lithium ions in the nanoparticles,” said Feng Wang, a scientist in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Sustainable Energy Technologies Division who led the study. “But unlike water, lithium ions are It selectively flows out of certain areas, causing inconsistencies in lithium ion concentration across the lattice."
The researchers pointed out that before lithium ions enter the lattice, the structure of the lattice is very uniform. Once lithium ions enter, it will stretch the lattice. When lithium ions flow out, the lattice shrinks again. Uneven movement of lithium ions can cause lasting damage because it deforms the structure of the active components within the battery and can lead to battery fatigue failure.
The researchers speculate that this phenomenon may also occur in the chemistries of other high-performance batteries, and the findings could help develop batteries that charge faster and have longer standby times.
