Sodium sulfur batteries use sodium and sulfur as anodes and cathodes respectively, with alumina ceramics serving as both separators and electrolytes. At a certain operating temperature, sodium ions undergo reversible reactions between alumina ceramics and sulfur, forming energy release and storage. The specific energy density of sodium sulfur batteries is 3-4 times that of batteries. They are small in size, capable of high current and high-power discharge, with high charging and discharging efficiency, and abundant reserves of raw material resources.
The disadvantage of sodium sulfur batteries is the strong corrosiveness of their positive and negative active substances, which requires strict requirements for battery materials, battery structure, and operating conditions. The operating temperature is usually between 300 ℃ and 350 ℃, and additional heating equipment is required to maintain the temperature. Moreover, sodium sulfur batteries can only operate at temperatures around 300 ℃, resulting in longer startup time and limiting their application to some extent.
After years of cooperation between the Shanghai Silicate Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Electric Power Company, we have successfully developed a 650Ah capacity sodium sulfur energy storage single cell battery with independent intellectual property rights, making China the second country in the world to master the core technology of large capacity sodium sulfur single cell batteries after Japan. In 2015, Furui to Qintang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and the Hefei Solid State Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly developed a sodium sulfur monomer battery, which was included in the national 863 plan project.
