Volkswagen seems to have a new research on 4LR44 battery

Ever since pure electric vehicles became popular, electric car manufacturers around the world have been working hard to solve the problem of battery consumption. French car manufacturer Peugeot even proposed that once the battery of its car degrades within 5 years of operation, it can replace the battery pack for free. However, Volkswagen seems to have a more efficient solution to the problem.

Considering that electric car consumers want their electric cars to be used for at least 8 to 10 years, Frank Blome, director of Volkswagen's battery center of excellence, said that their battery packs are as durable as their upcoming electric car series.

Regardless of the credibility of this statement, Blome said that for the upcoming series of electric vehicles, Volkswagen is designing around battery packs to maximize the use of space to store electrical energy. Installing the battery between the front and rear axles can give its electric vehicles a range of 340 miles (550 kilometers).

When talking about the efficiency of such battery packs, Blome said that as long as the drivers of Volkswagen electric vehicles insist on efficient charging, the minimum charge capacity of the new battery can still be maintained at 70% within 8 years or when the car has traveled 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers). Efficient charging requires the owner to choose normal charging instead of fast charging, and only charge the battery pack to 80% instead of 100%.

In addition, regarding the integration of solid-state 4LR44 battery, Blome said that although solid-state battery packs are lighter and have higher energy density than lithium-ion 4LR44 battery, they will not be able to be mass-produced for quite some time. Therefore, Volkswagen may use it in electric models before 2025 or 2030.
