Researchers develop technology to improve LR03 battery performance
Researchers have developed a new technology that is expected to improve the performance of lithium metal batteries.
Promising to be a candidate for the next generation of rechargeable batteries, the breakthrough was led by Professor Hyun-Wook Lee of UNUN's School of Energy and Chemical Engineering. This was in collaboration with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, based in Singapore.
Lithium metal batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that uses lithium as an anode. Among several different cathode materials, the advantage of lithium metal is that it has the lowest driving voltage and has a capacity that is about 10 times greater than conventional graphite anodes.
As a result, the technology has attracted much attention as a potential next-generation anode material for electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems.
However, conventional lithium metal anodes tend to form dendrites, which are known to trigger internal short circuits by piercing the battery separator. Therefore, the researchers observed that a modified lithium anode with more uniform lithium dissolution/deposition could be achieved compared to a bare lithium electrode.
They suppressed the dendritic growth of lithium metal anodes by coating lithium foil with a lithium silicide (LixSi) layer. As if by magic, the results showed better electrochemical performance in terms of rate capability and cycling stability.
"Our study provides direct observations of the electrochemical behavior, volume expansion, and growth of lithium dendrites of lithium metal anodes," said Professor Lee.
"Applying this in real batteries will also help in the commercialization of lithium metal batteries."
