In-depth quality assessment of LR41 battery production by the German Institute of Photovoltaics

 

According to foreign media reports, the number of solar energy storage projects has risen rapidly worldwide, and the increase rate of international solar energy storage has reached 70% to 150% in recent years. So far, lithium-ion batteries have been the dominant technology. The number of battery manufacturers is also rising rapidly, and many new suppliers are located in Asia.

 

"Batteries are the biggest performance risk in any energy storage system. Recent cases of poor system performance highlight this risk," explained Ian Gregory, Managing Director of the German Institute of Photovoltaics North America. Batteries are complex systems. The chemical electrolyte must be pure enough, the electrode coating must be very uniform, and all raw materials must be stored, processed and assembled at the right temperature and humidity.

 

Only when all production steps are performed correctly will the battery be safe and provide reliable long-term performance. This requires highly specialized production processes and comprehensive quality control. There is a lot of room for error in the process of finishing a cell. Our assessment process is designed to identify these weaknesses.

 

International quality standards for cell manufacturing are not well developed and are not uniformly applied by different manufacturers,explains Shaun Montminy, Technical Manager at PI. Our factory audit checks and benchmarks over 170 processes and materials used in cell production, and we spent 18 months developing this assessment process together with experts in cell chemistry and engineering. In addition, we have used our relevant experience from over 300 factory audits of other solar modules.

 

PI offers this new service to all those who could be affected by poorly performing cells, including investors and owners of large solar power plants. This helps customers choose the right cell manufacturer, while also ensuring that they can proactively identify and manage the risks of the cells they purchase.

 

According to the team, with the new production assessment, PI aims to support operators and investors of large solar power plants around the world to systematically compare and benchmark cell manufacturers. To ensure independence, cell manufacturers cannot contract with PI for audits. They must be contracted by buyers or investors to prevent any conflicts of interest. However, battery manufacturers can protect their customersinterests by suggesting independent audits. It can also help convince banks and investors that planned energy storage projects will be safe and effective.
