New technology to improve performance of lithium ion battery 18650
Researchers at UNIST have designed a new technology that can significantly improve the performance of lithium ion battery 18650. The scientists believe that this technology can help develop the next generation of rechargeable batteries. In addition, the study has confirmed whether the theory can improve battery performance to enable real-time in-situ observation of cycling between charge and discharge.
lithium ion battery 18650 rely on lithium as an anode. It turns out that lithium has the lowest driving voltage among a variety of different cathode materials. It also has the lowest driving voltage and can withstand about 10 times more capacity than traditional graphite anodes. As a result, lithium has become the strongest contender as a potential anode material for next-generation electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems.
Unfortunately, lithium metal anodes have been difficult to successfully integrate into commercial batteries. Lithium metal has a habit of growing into dendrite-like structures when charging and discharging. This can negatively affect the performance of the battery because the dendrites can pierce the battery separator and trigger internal short circuits.
The researchers have determined that there is a way to suppress these dendrites. The scientists coated lithium foil with a layer of lithium silicide. The results showed excellent electrochemical performance with regard to rate capability and cycling stability.
Additional in situ optical microscopy studies were performed during the research. The scientists monitored the electrochemical deposition of lithium in the lithium silicide modified electrodes, as well as the bare lithium electrodes. It was determined that the use of modified lithium anodes allowed for more uniform lithium dissolution/deposition compared to conventional bare models.
Further research into this technology will allow scientists to simplify and improve the design of lithium ion battery 18650. The researchers believe that this work will help provide consumers with more powerful, durable and efficient batteries that are also safe and rechargeable.
