The first requirement for ship batteries is that they are harmless to the environment and people, sustainable development, and batteries certified by classification societies are also required under this premise. There are many types of ship batteries. Lead acid batteries have been used before, but later nickel hydrogen batteries and lithium batteries appeared, and most lead batteries were gradually replaced. Due to the requirements of environmental development, the batteries produced by ship battery manufacturers have basically shifted to nickel hydrogen batteries and lithium batteries. Therefore, currently, ship batteries mainly use nickel hydrogen batteries, energy storage lithium batteries, and lithium iron phosphate batteries. For large vessels, there may be various electronic products available
(1) Nickel hydrogen batteries certified by classification societies
Although nickel hydrogen batteries are a type of new energy battery, their manufacturing cost is higher than lead-acid batteries due to the chemical properties of their raw materials. Although they are lower than lithium batteries, they are in an awkward position in terms of energy density, weight, and power increase ability. Therefore, few ships use nickel hydrogen batteries as battery energy storage, and therefore few manufacturers undergo classification society certification. The main reason is that the economic benefits are not cost-effective.
(2) Classification Society Lithium Battery Certification
The invention of lithium-ion batteries is a major advancement in the development of new energy storage. Lithium batteries, as a high energy density and low weight power source, are regarded by the battery industry as one of the most promising batteries for development in the 21st century. Meanwhile, lithium batteries are an environmentally friendly energy storage device. Compared to lead-acid batteries, it causes much less pollution to the environment and is easier to control. Production and manufacturing can basically prevent environmental pollution and harm to the living environment of animals or humans.
As a high-energy density battery, lithium batteries also have relatively high safety hazards. From invention to early commercialization, lithium batteries often experienced explosions and natural accidents. In addition, the high production and manufacturing costs to some extent limit its application. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries have high energy density and the risk of manufacturing individual cells, not to mention backup batteries for ships. Therefore, lithium batteries rarely received ship certification in the early stages.
With the development of technology, contemporary lithium battery technology is advancing rapidly. At present, lithium batteries such as polymer lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries can be used as backup power sources for ships. In the future, these two types of batteries will be used as backup power sources for ships. Therefore, if lithium battery manufacturers have the strength, they will consider conducting classification society certification for lithium batteries. However, lithium iron phosphate batteries are the best way to popularize these two types of batteries. Although the energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries is lower than that of polymer lithium batteries, their manufacturing cost and battery safety functions are superior to lithium batteries.
