  Do Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) Batteries Spontaneously Combust?

  Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries are rechargeable and commonly used in hybrid vehicles, cameras, and portable electronics. While they are generally safer than lithium-ion batteries, spontaneous combustion is theoretically possible under extreme conditions, though extremely rare in practical use.

  Ni-MH batteries rely on the reaction between nickel oxyhydroxide and a metal hydride electrode. Overcharging or deep discharging can generate heat and gas (e.g., hydrogen), leading to pressure buildup. If the battery’s safety vent is blocked or the thermal management system fails, this pressure could cause casing rupture, thermal runaway, or even ignition. However, modern Ni-MH batteries include safety features like pressure-sensitive vents and flame-retardant casings to prevent such scenarios.

  Compared to Li-ion batteries, Ni-MH batteries have a lower energy density and are less prone to thermal runaway. Cases of Ni-MH spontaneous combustion are rarely reported in consumer products or vehicles, as long as they are used within specified voltage and temperature limits (typically -20°C to 45°C for charging). Proper maintenance, such as avoiding overcharging and using compatible chargers, further minimizes risks. In hybrid vehicles, Ni-MH batteries are often paired with cooling systems to ensure safe operation, making spontaneous combustion a negligible concern in real-world applications.
