  At present, mainstream new energy vehicles in China mainly use power batteries with positive electrode materials of lithium iron phosphate or ternary materials, both of which have advantages in the fields of new energy buses and passenger cars.

  What is the advantage and disadvantage of lithium titanate batteries compared to lithium iron phosphate and ternary batteries? This also starts with the performance of the three types of batteries. As is well known, the performance of lithium batteries is mainly determined by the positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte, and separator. The positive and negative electrode materials have a significant impact on the key indicators of the battery, such as capacity, energy density, cycle life, safety, rate performance, cost, etc.

  Despite using ternary as the positive electrode material, lithium titanate batteries have broken the traditional battery technology route of using graphene as the negative electrode and instead used lithium titanate as the negative electrode material, making it an outlier in the eyes of peers. But it is precisely the characteristics of lithium titanate itself that make this material's batteries have significant characteristics.

  Taking lithium iron phosphate graphene, ternary graphene, and ternary lithium titanate batteries as examples, based solely on energy density, lithium titanate batteries are at a disadvantage. According to a research report by Northeast Securities (000686, Stock Bar), the actual specific energy of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 100-120Wh/kg, while that of ternary batteries is 150-200Wh/kg. Among them, Tesla's nickel cobalt aluminum ternary batteries reach 252Wh/kg, while lithium titanate batteries only have 90Wh/kg, which is only half of some graphite negative electrode materials batteries.

  From a cost perspective, lithium titanate batteries also have no advantages. At present, the raw materials for lithium titanate batteries include titanium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide, which are more expensive than graphite negative electrode materials. According to the research results of China Battery Network, the current cost of lithium iron phosphate and ternary batteries is between 1100 yuan/kwh and 1200 yuan/kwh, while the cost of lithium titanate batteries is about 2-3 times that of ternary batteries.

  How can lithium titanate batteries participate in market competition when their energy density is double and their cost is 2-3 times higher? Obviously, its unique advantages have moved some industry insiders.
