Cathode - nickel 55 single crystal material
The 100kWh battery pack recently released by Weilai, that is, the "only smoke but no fire" battery previously announced by Ningde Times, has increased the energy density by 37% and greatly increased the range without changing the size of the battery pack shell and almost no weight gain. The nickel 55 ternary cell used in the new battery is an important factor to improve the energy density. Its cathode material is a single crystal material with high voltage. What is a single crystal? Before answering this question, let's take a look at the technical direction of cathode materials.
The so-called "ternary" lithium battery refers to its cathode materials are nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM). Nickel is used to increase capacity. In order to stabilize the structure, cobalt is used to reduce costs and improve the structural stability of materials. The higher the proportion of nickel and the less the proportion of cobalt and manganese, the higher the energy density, but the lower the safety.
In order to improve the energy density, the NCM ratio increased from "111 (N: C: M=1:1:1)" to "523" and then to "811". This route has always been the mainstream of the development of ternary cathode materials.
The other direction corresponds to the single crystal route. The newly released cathode of the electric core uses single crystal 5-series materials. Single crystal materials are more suitable for high voltage applications. At present, most of the commercial ternary cathode materials are secondary spherical polycrystalline materials of about 10 microns, which are formed by the agglomeration of nano primary particles. For those who have no concept of polycrystalline and single crystal, please refer to quartz sand and glass, both of which are silicon dioxide. Quartz sand is polycrystalline material, while glass can be regarded as single crystal material.
