Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are new energy clean power vehicles that use hydrogen as fuel. They have the significant advantages of "zero" emissions and high energy conversion efficiency. They are one of the main directions for the development of new energy vehicles in the future. However, at this stage, one of the key problems restricting the promotion and popularization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is the problem of CO poisoning in hydrogen fuel cells. In response to this key scientific problem, with the support of the "Frontier Research on Large Scientific Devices" key project, research groups such as Lu Junling, Wei Shiqiang, and Yang Jinlong of the University of Science and Technology of China jointly tackled the problem and used atomic layer deposition technology to perform SiO2 for the first time. By precisely constructing single-atom dispersed Fe1(OH)x species on the surface of the supported Pt metal nanoparticles, a new Fe1(OH)x-Pt interface catalyst was prepared, achieving ultra-high performance at -75°C to 110°C. The 100% selective CO removal in a wide temperature range breaks through the two bottleneck limitations of high catalyst operating temperature and narrow temperature range in the existing CO oxidation reaction. In this work, the researchers confirmed that the structure of Fe1(OH)x species in the CO oxidation reaction atmosphere is Fe1(OH)3 through in-situ synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectrum analysis. Through theoretical calculations, the spatial configuration of Fe1(OH)3 on the Pt surface was further determined, and its catalytic reaction mechanism was deeply revealed. Relevant research results were published in the journal Nature. This research work provides a comprehensive and effective means of protection for the "heart" of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, solving the problem of CO poisoning during frequent cold starts and continuous operation under various extreme climate conditions, laying the foundation for the future of this type of vehicles. The rollout cleared a major hurdle.
