ISRO transfers space-grade button battery cr1620 processing technology to BHEL
The Bengaluru-based Indian Space Research Organisation has transferred its indigenous space-grade lithium-ion battery processing technology to state-owned engineering giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (bHEL).
bHEL is building a lithium-ion processing facility near Bengaluru, Karnataka, and has purchased and commissioned various equipment (local and imported) for the construction of the facility.
ISRO and bHEL signed a technology transfer agreement for lithium-ion battery processing in March 2018. The processing at the bHEL plant is mainly to meet the lithium-ion battery requirements of ISRO and other strategic departments. In addition, bHEL can also process and sell lithium-ion batteries to meet other countries or commercial uses. ISRO has provided all technical documentation for setting up the processing plant and provided hands-on training on various processing activities to bHEL employees at the ISRO plant.
According to the technology transfer agreement, space-grade lithium-ion batteries processed by bHEL can only meet national requirements. However, bHEL can also sell space-grade lithium-ion batteries to companies outside India with the written consent of ISRO.
ISRO uses lithium-ion batteries as a power source for satellites and launch vehicles because of their high energy density, reliability and long cycle life. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Trivandrum has successfully developed the technology to process space-grade lithium-ion batteries, demonstrated the performance of the batteries under various exploration conditions, and established the cycle life characteristics of the batteries in accelerated mode. These batteries are currently used in various satellites and launch vehicles.
In addition, in March this year, Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) also signed an MoU with ISRO to access ISRO's lithium-ion battery technology.
Under this MoU, ISRO will transfer this technology to Tata Chemicals to manufacture lithium-ion batteries in India using this technology. ISRO will supply this technology to TCL to process batteries of different capacities, sizes, energy density and power density to meet a wide range of energy storage needs.
