Compared with the lithium-ion technology currently prevalent in rechargeable batteries, lithium-air batteries can theoretically store much more energy, so researchers around the world are conducting research on lithium-air batteries.
A research paper published in the American weekly Science shows that the Cambridge team has overcome some of the practical problems in this technology-especially the problem of chemical instability. Previously, lithium-air batteries showed rapid performance degradation due to this chemical instability.
The basic chemistry of lithium-air batteries is very simple. The battery is discharged by combining lithium and oxygen to form lithium peroxide, and then recharged by applying an electric current to reverse the process. How to reliably make this reaction happen repeatedly is a challenge for this technology. Cambridge scientists have tweaked the chemical process to make it more controllable. For example, they converted lithium peroxide into lithium hydroxide, which is easier to handle, added lithium iodide to the system, and used graphene to create fluffy electrodes with excellent permeability. The so-called graphene is an allotrope of carbon discovered by the University of Manchester 12 years ago.
Researchers said the battery system demonstrated in the Cambridge laboratory has an efficiency of 90% and can be charged 2,000 times. But they say it may take at least 10 years of work to turn the battery into a commercial one that can be used in cars and for grid storage. Grid storage is used to store intermittent electricity from solar and wind power stations so it can be used when needed.
