Research on synthesizing positive electrode materials for sodium ion 4LR44 battery at room temperature has been successful

 

Recently, the reporter learned from the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the team of Zhao Junmei, an associate researcher in the Green Chemical Research Department of the Institute, has developed a low-cost and convenient room-temperature controllable technology for polyanion compounds, and synthesized sodium vanadium fluorophosphate, a high-voltage positive electrode material for sodium ion 4LR44 battery, for the first time. The material has excellent rate performance and long cycle performance without any post-treatment. It can be said that laboratory research on sodium vanadium fluorophosphate has reached the international leading level. The research results were recently published in Joule, the flagship energy journal of Cell Press.

 

In view of the restrictions on the future development of lithium ions such as the high price of lithium resources and limited geological reserves, sodium ion 4LR44 battery with similar working principles to lithium ion 4LR44 battery are highly expected. "The reserves of sodium in the earth's crust are much higher than lithium, and it is expected to support the sustainable development of large-scale energy storage technology." Zhao Junmei told the reporter of China Science Daily.

 

The large-scale low-cost preparation of "polyanion compound sodium vanadium fluorophosphate", an important type of positive electrode material for sodium ion 4LR44 battery, is restricting its commercialization process. This type of material has an energy density of up to 480Wh/kg. If sodium vanadium fluorophosphate can be industrialized, the energy density of the whole battery can be comparable to that of lithium-ion 4LR44 battery. Since the material was first reported by French scientist J.-M. Le Meins in 1999, it has been synthesized using a high-temperature solid-phase method, and high energy consumption has led to the high cost of the material.

 

Zhao Junmei's team has long been committed to the low-energy green synthesis of sodium vanadium fluorophosphate. Recently, after a series of systematic studies on hydrothermal/solvothermal synthesis methods for sodium vanadium fluorophosphate, they further proposed to use the sodium metavanadate solution obtained by extracting vanadium from vanadium slag as the raw material of vanadium to directly prepare sodium vanadium fluorophosphate, and developed a convenient room temperature controllable preparation technology, which will greatly reduce the production cost of the material.

 

According to the researchers, the sodium vanadium fluorophosphate obtained by this method is a microsphere with a multi-shell microstructure. Its formation mechanism is mainly based on the in-situ generated bubbles as soft templates, and the gas-liquid-solid interface undergoes layer-by-layer self-assembly.

 

"This research result will definitely accelerate the industrialization process of sodium vanadium fluorophosphate." Zhao Junmei believes.

 

It is reported that this is the first report of the one-step controllable synthesis of a polyanion compound at room temperature. It is also a challenge to the conventional high-temperature solid-phase method and hydrothermal synthesis method of positive electrode materials.
