What is the reason for this huge difference? What are the pain points and key points in the entire industry chain?
Currently, lithium-ion batteries are most commonly used in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. In terms of consumer experience, an essential difference between electric vehicles and internal combustion vehicles is “range anxiety”. The so-called "range anxiety" means that when electric car users find that the remaining battery power begins to decrease, they will worry about not being able to reach their destination, causing anxiety. Further analysis shows that this is closely related to the short driving range, long charging time, short battery life, and expensive battery cost of electric vehicles. If there is no breakthrough in battery technology and production capacity, and electric vehicles cannot reach mass production, they will not be able to capture the market.
In this regard, Japanese researchers, who have always been in the field of new energy regardless of cost, have successfully broken through the bottleneck of existing battery technology and made vehicle lithium batteries more durable and longer-lasting.
Toyota, which entered the field of electric vehicles some time ago, cooperated with a Japanese public laboratory and four universities and found that uneven movement and aggregation of lithium ions in electrodes are the biggest culprits that limit battery life and endurance. This phenomenon can also cause batteries to overheat.
Currently, Toyota has developed a new type of battery that can effectively suppress the uneven movement and aggregation of lithium ions in the electrode. This new battery can increase the mileage and battery life of electric vehicles by up to 15%. At the same time, battery safety is also higher. Unfortunately, Toyota has not disclosed when this new battery will be put into mass production, so it will take a while longer to see cars equipped with this high-performance battery.
Following Toyota, Hitachi has also made new progress in the endurance of lithium batteries. Japanese media reported that Hitachi has just developed lithium-ion battery technology for pure electric vehicles (EV) that can travel about 400 kilometers on a single charge.
Compared with previous batteries, the capacity has been increased to 2 times, with 320 watt hours per kilogram. The capacity has been increased to 2 times, and the driving distance is about 40% longer than that of current pure electric vehicles. The electrodes are made of nickel alloy, etc., and through improvements such as increasing the thickness, large amounts of electricity can be stored. The battery developed by Hitachi this time uses nickel as the main component of the cathode material, which is easy to store lithium ions, and the thickness of the electrode is doubled to increase the number of ions that can be stored. The negative electrode does not use the usual carbon-based materials, but silicon as the main component, which is easy to store and release lithium ions. With these improvements, more electricity can be stored.
In addition, the "energy density" that indicates battery performance is expected to be approximately twice as high as the original battery cell, or 320 watt hours per kilogram. Close to the maximum a lithium-ion battery can achieve. According to reports, if equipped with a pure electric vehicle, it can travel about 400 kilometers under standard conditions. Among the pure electric vehicles currently on the market, Nissan's "LEAF" can travel 280 kilometers on a single charge. If the driving distance reaches 400 kilometers, it is expected to greatly promote the popularity of pure electric vehicles.
