Cobalt metal prices continued to rise in 2018. Compared with 520,000 yuan/ton at the beginning of the first quarter, the price increased by more than 20% in April. Although the rise in raw materials was not only affected by short-term capital speculation, the overall industrial supply distribution was too concentrated. , will push up the price to continue to rise in the medium to long term. For the lithium battery and new energy vehicle industries, it is inevitable that material costs will begin to be reflected quarter by quarter. This will also test whether the battery industry can adjust as soon as possible and reduce its dependence on cobalt metal.
In the short term, the trend of rising cobalt prices will be difficult to reverse, and the transformation from a material route to a high-nickel material technology direction has gradually become the consensus of the entire industry.
As the price of cobalt continues to rise, and the market supply of total cobalt mine production is limited, the material structure of power batteries is bound to undergo new changes.
In order to solve the problem of rising costs, power batteries are advancing towards high energy density products. What battery cell factories do is to actively apply cathode materials such as nickel manganese cobalt and nickel cobalt aluminum to increase the use of nickel metal, so that the proportion of cobalt metal will gradually decrease.
This changing trend can also be seen from the shipments of cathode material companies.
Recently, Dangsheng Technology recently released its annual report. The company's net profit in 2017 was 250 million, a year-on-year increase of 151.97%. Its announcement disclosed that as cathode materials benefited from rising prices of upstream cobalt and lithium resources, shipments of cathode materials increased by 21.7% year-on-year to 9,800 tons.
Due to the impact of rising cobalt prices, Dangsheng Technology also disclosed in its annual report that ternary 532 was the main product in 2017. It is estimated that the company's high-nickel ternary shipments in 2017 will be about 1,000 tons, accounting for 10%.
As high-nickel ternary products become a trend, Dangsheng Technology said that the 811 cathode will be mass-produced this year, with smooth customer expansion and great follow-up potential.
It is understood that Dangsheng Technology Power’s ternary cathode material customers basically include the top ten battery manufacturers in China, and it has expanded several major customers this year. As a leading manufacturer of high-nickel ternary cathode materials, its 622 product scale and quality are at the forefront of the industry. Dangsheng Technology also revealed that the company's 811 cathode has been mass-produced, and its downstream customers are currently in the pilot stage and are expected to start contributing revenue in the second half of the year.
This also adapts to the current technological changes in lithium batteries. According to previous plans, by 2020, the specific energy of power batteries will reach 300 Wh/kg, cycle more than 1,000 times, and the cost will be within 0.8 yuan/Wh. The cathode material corresponding to this goal is high-nickel ternary.
